LOCAVORE

Leever’s Locavore is a a family grocery store focused on local producers and local products providing the freshest and highest quality food and goods for its North Denver neighborhood. The family owned and operated a local Save-a-lot store on the site for decades before deciding to make something a bit more fun and unique.

The bones of the building were fantastic. Beautiful steel trusses were above the old dropped ceilings and original hardwood floors were found below layers of flooring and restored to a rough but beautiful floor for the store. The new store’s design vision was led by Genghis Kern. The original storefront with its extensive northern glazing was saved but a new entry was needed to announce this new concept to the neighborhood while creating a more centralized entry experience which also highlights the newly designed central bar, three unit food court and the mezzanine tucked up close to those great steel trusses.

A nearly 20 foot tall flared steel entry was the solution framing the new glazed entry from the parking lot entering directly in front of the new bar sitting in front of that northern glazing. The bar serves coffee and beer and wine and is a neighborhood gathering spot. The food pods and mezzanine offer a extra level of activity and community that was central to the Locavore vision. I this case project most of the design solution was done by subtraction and by recognizing the power and elegance of a well crafted building… with of course a huge steel clad entry piece connecting to the public and defining the patio for all to enjoy.
