FOOTHILL

In one of Golden Colorado’s oldest subdivisions a midcentury ranch, the subdivision’s model home, occupied an incredible lot that is unrivaled in its beauty with amazing views along Colorado’s Front Range from from Long’s Peak to Pikes Peak, the expanse of City lights and the plains beyond to the east, all while sitting immediately adjacent to an incredible Mesa.

The owners had found a truly amazing property, however the existing home was not celebrating the site. The eaves extended east and the home was decidedly internally focused and not at all connected with the incredible site just outside its doors. The owners loved the potential. And by honoring what was already present in the great mid-century bones a series of additions allowed the house to finally realize its potential and embrace that incredible site. This is the Foothill House.

The house was opened up through a series of 3 main insertions. This peeled up the low slung roofs allowing the living room to capture more of the eastern views while allowing the kitchen to open directly towards and up to the mesa. It also allowed the volume of these spaces to blend together and extend into the landscape. A second addition, a new primary suite was added atop the garage and captured previously hidden views both north and south along the Front Range. The stair was relocated and opened up and is now capped by an office on the second floor leading to the new primary suite. An exterior stair then leads to the rooftop deck and its 360 degree views.

The owners were both fully excited by the new opportunities but respectful of the existing home and its history. Existing elements were restored and reused including the previous exposed interior roof joists which now are the stairs, the incredible brick fireplace was rescued from its horrible stone covering and original shelves are now prominently featured in the living room.

The home is cozy and playful but decidedly modern and open. Details and materials are the finishing touched for the family and the renovation of this home shows the true potential it always had while also embracing the extraordinary site in a way it had never done before.
