SKYLIGHT
The Skylight House is a testament to great clients (playful and open-minded) a fearless builder (with exceptional attention to detail) and exceptional teamwork and communication.
The result is both very contextual and sympatric to its context. A neighborhood composed of many brick bungalows which is being overrun with (sometimes cheaply made) three-story homes and duplexes with the sole design goal of maximizing total buildable area and maximizing sellable square footage. That was decidedly NOT the goal of the family that calls Skylight home.
Their design goals were straightforward. they sought a 3 bedroom family house with an additional guest space and space for two offices. They wanted something modern, with timeless and durable materials that would perform and endure over time. They also valued a lack of clutter, a restrained pallet, a chef’s kitchen , and most importantly a family-friendly house, with a few unique or playful elements if possible?
What they got was a design with a huge north facing skylight cutting through the roof of their contextually sensitive two-story gable-roofed home. It so happens that below that skylight opening the house to the sky is a 17’x7.5’ dyneema catamaran net for the kids (and adults) that does in fact add a playful element to the home while also sitting directly above that chef’s kitchen. Other unexpected elements include the outdoor sunken conversation pit and central viewing area for family movies.
The materials of the home are traditional, durable and make up a serene restrained palette that features ample storage to minimize clutter and maximize functionality. The main level of the house also seamlessly flows into both back and a narrow side yard. The program includes a family room, office and guestroom in the basement. Additional details include the custom wood slats at the stair, a media focal point in the living space with a concealed doo to ample storage, lofts and ladders in each of the kids bedrooms, a hidden second floor office, custom exterior panels providing additional privacy in the narrow side yard, and of course, that net below the skylight that floods the home with natural light and provides animated conditions throughout the day.
